American Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon Participant Rescued in Solukhumbu Due to Altitude Sickness

SOLUKHUMBU, May 22 – A 40-year-old American national who travelled to Solukhumbu to participate in the prestigious Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon was successfully rescued by Nepal Police on Thursday afternoon after suffering from severe altitude sickness.

The tourist, identified as Alexander Wright, fell suddenly ill while staying at the Amadablam Hotel in Khumjung, located within the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality-4.

Swift Response by Nepal Police

According to the District Police Office, Solukhumbu, as soon as information regarding Wright’s condition was received, a three-member rescue team from the Khumjung Police Post was mobilised immediately. The operation was led by Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police (ASI) Surendra Prasad Dhungana.

Working in coordination with local residents, the police personnel managed to safely evacuate the ailing marathon runner and transport him to the Khunde Hospital in Khumbu Pasang Lhamu-4 for prompt medical treatment.

Current Status

The District Police Office has confirmed that Wright's health condition has since stabilised.

"The American national is currently out of danger, in normal health condition, and is able to communicate smoothly," a police official stated.

The Everest region, known for its extreme high-altitude geography, frequently poses challenges related to acute mountain sickness (AMS) for foreign tourists, trekkers, and mountaineers who visit the area.
