Asian Games Qualifier: Phannita Maya’s Four-Wicket Haul Powers Thailand to a Dominant 7-Wicket Victory Over Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR — A masterclass in bowling by Phannita Maya guided Thailand Women to a resounding seven-wicket victory over hosts Malaysia Women in the 3rd match of the Asian Games Women's Qualifier at the Bayuemas Oval on Wednesday. Thailand chased down a modest target of 83 runs with 45 balls to spare, cementing a highly clinical performance in Group A.
Earlier in the day, Malaysia won the toss and elected to bat first, hoping to put up a challenging total on home turf. However, Thailand’s opening bowler Phannita Maya completely dismantled the Malaysian top order.
Maya bowled an extraordinary spell, picking up 4 wickets for just 14 runs in her 4 overs, including a maiden. She clean-bowled opener Ainna Hamizah Hashim for a duck in the first over and quickly followed it up by trapping Winifred Duraisingam (15) and Elsa Hunter (12) leg-before-wicket (lbw).
Malaysia's captain, Mas Elysa, fought a lonely battle in the middle. Elysa played a resilient, unbeaten knock of 45 runs off 52 balls, hitting 4 boundaries to ensure her team played out their full 20 overs. Aside from Mahirah Izzati Ismail (18), no other Malaysian batter reached double digits, as Onnicha Kamchomphu (2/15) maintained the pressure from the other end to restrict Malaysia to 82/7.
Key Stat: Malaysia managed only 4 boundaries in their entire 20-overs innings, heavily restricted by Thailand's spin and seam discipline.
Chantham's Blitz Ensures an Easy Chase
The target of 83 runs never looked like enough to trouble the experienced Thai batting lineup. Opening batswoman Natthakan Chantham took the game completely away from Malaysia right from the powerplay.
Chantham smashed a blistering 38 runs off just 25 deliveries, hitting 6 boundaries at a striking rate of 152.00. She combined with Aphisara Suwanchonrathi (21) for a solid opening partnership that effectively sealed the game.
Although Malaysia's Ainna Hamizah Hashim bowled beautifully to pick up 2 wickets for 12 runs, her effort came too late. Nannapat Koncharoenkai remained steady at the end with an unbeaten 15 to guide Thailand across the finish line in just 12.3 overs.
| Match Summary | Score | Top Performer | Best Bowler |
| Malaysia Women | 82/7 (20 Ov) | Mas Elysa 45* (52) | Ainna Hashim 2/12 (3 Ov) |
| Thailand Women | 85/3 (12.3 Ov) | Natthakan Chantham 38 (25) | Phannita Maya 4/14 (4 Ov) |
Unsurprisingly, Phannita Maya was named the Player of the Match for her decisive four-wicket haul that set up the victory.
