Asian qualifying for the ICC Women's T20 World Cup: Nepal defeats Malaysia by five runs

Kathmandu, Nepal defeated Malaysia in its opening match of the ongoing ICC Women's T20 World Cup Asia Qualifier by a score of five runs.

Nepal set Malaysia a target of 85 runs today at the Bayuemas Oval Cricket Ground in Kuala Lumpur after losing the toss and electing to bat first.

In 20 overs, Nepal scored 84 runs while losing 6 wickets. With 38 and one four in 54 balls, Sita Rana Magar was still alive. Similarly, Apsari Begam scored 17, and skipper Rubina Chhetry Belbase added 12 more. Other than the three, no other players could have significantly increased Nepal's run total.

In response, Malaysia was held to a total of 79 runs in 20 overs while losing nine wickets. Ainna Hamizah contributed 14, Mas Elysa provided 10, and Malaysia's skipper Winifred Duraisingam contributed 28 runs.

In terms of bowling, Mahirah Izzati Ismail, Aisya Eleesa, and Nik Nur Atilea each took one wicket, while Ainna Hamizah took two.

Along with Malaysia, Bahrain, Bhutan, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, Nepal has been assigned to the tournament's group A.

China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Kuwait, and Myanmar make up group B. The top two teams moving on to the final will be able to compete in the Global T-20 qualification slated for 2024, as will the top two teams from each group that advanced to the semi-final round.

Samjhana Khadka, Kajol Shrestha, Apsari Begam, Sita Rana Magar, Indu Barma, Kabita Kunwar, Kabita Joshi, Puja Mahato, Ashmina Karmacharya, and Khusi Dangol are all members of the Nepali squad that makes up Chhetry.

Bahrain and Nepal will meet on Friday.
