Chaudhary, Chhantyal set national records

Kathmandu, Sanju Chaudhary of Banke and Junumaya Chhantyal of Nepal Police Club set new national records in senior women's section in the 24th Men's and 9th Women National Weightlifting Championship in Madhyapur Thimi, Bhaktapur, on Wednesday.

The 13th South Asian Games gold medalist Chaudhary lifted 78kg in snatch and 98kg in clean & jerk for a total of 176kg to claim a gold and better her own previous record in the women's 59kg section. Earlier, she held the national record of 74kg in snatch and 97kg in clean and jerk.

Prasansa Pun of Tribhuvan Army Club snatched 48kg and clean and jerked 57kg to win silver with a total weight of 105kg. Nepal Armed Police Force (APF) Club's Sarita Lama snatched 43kg and clean and jerked 54kg to secure a bronze.

Chhantyal also set a new national record in the

beating Rajyalaxmi Thapa's record to secure top finish. She lifted a total of 156kg including 68kg in snatch and 88kg in clean and jerk. Thapa held the record of 67kg in snatch and 87kg in clean and jerk with a total of 154kg.

Saraswati Gurung of APF Club secured second position snatching 58kg and clean and jerking 69kg for a total of 127kg. APF's Anjali Shrestha finished third snatching 48kg and clean and jerking 60kg for a total of 108kg.

The lone participant in the women's 59kg youth section Sarita Yadav of Saptari lifted 46kg in snatch and 60kg in clean and jerk for a total of 106kg to bag a gold. In the women's 55kg youth, Puja Mandal of Saptari snatched 40kg, clean and jerked 56kg for a total of 96kg to secure gold. Samana Tharu of Bardiya snatched 35kg, clean and jerked 38kg for a total of 73kg for silver while Santoshi Yadav of Saptari snatched 30kg, clean and jerked 40kg for a total of 70 kg to walk away with a bronze.

Nanda Thapa of Bardiya secured gold in women's junior 55kg division snatching 46kg, clean and jerking 53kg lifting a total weight of 99kg. Radhika Chaudhary of Dang finished second snatching 36kg, clean and jerking 42kg for a total of 78kg.

Army lifters dominated the senior women's 55kg division clean sweeping top three positions. Prabha Tharu claimed gold snatching 52kg, and clean and jerking 68kg for a total lift of 120kg while Srijana Tamang snatched 44kg, and clean and jerked 51kg to lift a total weight of 95kg and finished second. Asmita Pulami also lifted a total weight of 95kg — 40kg in snatch and 55kg in clean and jerk — but finished third on the basis of technical reasons.

The senior women's 64kg division saw Sarada Chaudhary of Army secure top finish. She snatched 67kg, and clean and jerked 80kg to lift a total weight of 147kg. Devi Chaudhary of Police stood second lifting 64kg in snatch, and 77 kg in clean and jerk for a total of 141kg while her departmental colleague Puja Kumal came third snatching 50kg and clean and jerking 67kg for a total of 117kg.

The men's 73kg senior section saw Jeevan Tamang of Army secure gold with a total lift of 199kg. He snatched 86kg and clean and jerked 113kg. Rahul Kumar Das of the APF secured silver snatching 82kg and clean and jerking 102kg for a total weight of 184kg. Dhana Bahadur Jhakri Magar of Kaski walked away with a bronze snatching 85kg and clean and jerking 98kg for a total weight of 183kg.
