Gary Kirsten, Dan Christian join Netherlands coaching staff ahead of T20 World Cup

Melbourne, The Netherlands Cricket Board on Tuesday added former India World Cup-winning coach Gary Kirsten and veteran Australian all-rounder, Dan Christian, to its coaching staff.

The Netherlands have been drawn in Group A of the T20 World Cup along with UAE, Namibia and Sri Lanka. They will play the United Arab Emirates on October 16, followed by Namibia and Sri Lanka on October 18 and 20, respectively. The top two teams from each group will advance to the Super 12 stage, which begins on October 21.

Kirsten has already worked with head coach Ryan Cook and captain Scott Edwards at the Cape Town Cricket Academy.

Kirsten prominently led India to victory in the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup and later the title to Gujarat Titans on his debut in the IPL. Kirsten played for South Africa in the 1992 Cricket World Cup in Australia.

Kirsten, 54, has already enjoyed her time with the Dutch camp and feels she can make a mark on the big stage in Australia.

Kirsten was quoted as saying by the ICC, I really enjoyed working with the Dutch team in Cape Town and I look forward to joining them as a consultant in the T20 World Cup. I was impressed by the skill and professionalism I experienced during the camp. Was impressed with the level. They are determined to make a big impact in the T20 World Cup.

At the same time, the 39-year-old Christian has played 23 T20s and 20 ODIs for Australia and has previously won nine domestic T20 titles around the world.

Christian has not played for his country since a T20I against Bangladesh in Mirpur last year, but the all-rounder has great experience playing in Australia and is helping the Dutch camp adapt to the conditions there. Huh.

I've had a couple of weeks to get to know the Dutch players, and I've been very impressed by everyone's work ethic at practice. I look forward to seeing them succeed on the field, said Christian.

The Netherlands lost their first warm-up match to Scotland by 18 runs on Monday and will play West Indies in Melbourne on Wednesday before travelling to Geelong for their first-round matches against the UAE, Namibia and Sri Lanka.
