Machhindra edge Three Star with last-gasp penalty goal

Kathmandu, League champions Machhindra Football Club (MFC) maintained their unbeaten run with a 1-0 victory over Three Star Club (TSC) in the Qatar Airways Martyr's Memorial 'A' Division League 2021/22 on Saturday.

Sujal Shrestha gave the victory to the champions from the penalty spot in the added minutes after referee Prakash Nath Shrestha deemed TSC's Jeevan Gurung had brought down Abhishek Gurung inside the box and pointed to the spot.

TSC, meanwhile, missed their opportunity to climb to second on the table after the defeat.

TSC's head coach Urjan Shrestha said the referee was wrong to give MFC the penalty in the added minute of the game. "I watched the replays and I think the referee was wrong with his decision. The tackle was on the ball and even Machhindra players were not appealing for the penalty," said Shrestha. Shrestha added his team missed chances to score in the game in a must win game which would have propelled them to second in the table.

MFC's head coach Prabesh Katuwal said he was happy for the three points. "It was a competitive match and we scored through a penalty. It was good result for us as there were few key players missing for us in this game," said Katuwal.

Champions MFC now have 32 points from 12 games while TSC lie at fourth with 18 points from 12 games.

Jawalakhel Youth Club will play Himalayan Sherpa Club in the first match at the Dasharath Stadium on Sunday at 1 pm. The second match between Manang Marsyangdi Club and New Road Team will be played in the same venue at 4:45 pm.
