Nepal Olympic Committee Condemns Allegations, Calls for Government’s Serious Attention
Kathmandu, June 27, 2025:
The Nepal Olympic Committee (NOC) has strongly objected to recent media reports claiming that two-thirds of national sports federations submitted a memorandum to the Minister for Youth and Sports demanding the dissolution and disciplinary action against the current NOC leadership, led by President Jeevan Ram Shrestha and Secretary General Rajib Shrestha.
In a press release issued on Thursday, NOC stated that such reports are misleading and baseless. It reaffirmed that, according to Nepal’s Sports Development Act 2077 and the Olympic Charter, only those national federations recognized by their respective international federations can be considered official members of the NOC. The committee claimed that the so-called "two-thirds majority" being cited has no legal standing under these regulations.
"Media outlets circulating these false claims are betraying public trust," the statement reads, adding that the accusations against the NOC are "completely unfounded and malicious."
Ongoing Legal Dispute
NOC highlighted that a case concerning the committee’s internal elections is currently sub judice at the Patan High Court. It stressed that any attempt to initiate disciplinary actions or seek dissolution of the NOC during this legal process amounts to interference in judicial proceedings and an attack on democratic governance.
Alleged Conspiracy to Block Asian Games Participation
The committee further alleged that the recent move by certain federations is part of a broader conspiracy aimed at preventing Nepal’s participation in key upcoming international events. These include the Youth Asian Games in Bahrain (October 2025) and the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan (September 2026).
According to the NOC, Nepal must register its participating sports disciplines by June 30, 2025, or risk disqualification from the Games. The authority to register athletes lies solely with the NOC, which is recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
"The timing and nature of this conspiracy suggest an attempt to undermine Nepal's representation in these prestigious events and damage Nepal’s sporting reputation internationally," the statement said.
Call for Prime Minister's Involvement
The NOC has appealed to the Minister for Youth and Sports and, more importantly, to the Prime Minister of Nepal to take the issue seriously and act responsibly. It warned that if Nepal fails to participate due to internal sabotage, not only would it harm athletes’ futures, but it could also strain Nepal’s diplomatic ties—particularly with Japan.
President Jeevan Ram Shrestha concluded in the statement:
"This is not merely an administrative dispute—it’s a politically motivated attempt to disrupt Nepal’s Olympic movement and destroy decades of progress. We urge all stakeholders to treat this matter with the seriousness it deserves."
