Nepali Muay Thai Star Sushmita to Make Professional Kickboxing Debut in India

KATHMANDU – Rising Nepali Muay Thai athlete Sushmita is set to transition into the world of professional kickboxing with an upcoming bout in India. Sushmita will compete in a K-1 fight scheduled for May 9, 2026.

The event, titled the Ronin Fight Championship, is being organized by former members of the royal family in Gujarat, India. In this high-stakes professional match, Sushmita will face off against Indian opponent Aarti Khatri.

A New Challenge: K-1 Style and UFC Gloves

This fight represents a significant shift for Sushmita, as it features a mixed kickboxing format. Unlike traditional bouts, this K-1 fight will utilize four-ounce gloves, the same type used in the UFC. The match will consist of three rounds, each lasting five minutes.

"This is a high-level round fight," explained her coach, Khagendra Chhetri. "Sushmita has never experienced four-ounce gloves before; this will be her first time. She is a talented athlete from Gandaki Province and is now on the path to becoming a full professional. Our ultimate target is the professional Muay Thai circuit in Thailand."

Financial Hurdles and Undefeated Record

Sushmita has built a reputation as a formidable fighter in India and has previously competed across Sri Lanka, India, and Nepal in various disciplines, including Muay Thai and Taekwondo. Remarkably, she maintains an undefeated record in Muay Thai.

Despite her success, financial constraints have hindered her career. According to Coach Chhetri, she has received invitations to compete in China, Japan, and Malaysia, but was unable to attend due to a lack of funds. The winner of the upcoming Gujarat championship is set to receive a prize of 100,000 Rupees.

Supporters believe that with adequate financial backing, Sushmita has the potential to achieve massive success on the international stage.
