Prem Bahadur Koirala Set to Officiate as Main Referee at CASA Rugby Sevens in Uzbekistan
KATHMANDU – In a historic milestone for Nepali rugby, referee Prem Bahadur Koirala is set to depart for Tashkent, Uzbekistan, this Thursday to serve as a Main Referee at the Central and South Asia (CASA) Rugby Sevens tournament.
The prestigious competition is scheduled to take place from May 17 to May 18.
A Grand Farewell
A formal farewell ceremony was held on Wednesday to honor Koirala before his international assignment. He was seen off by several high-ranking sports officials, including:
-
Ram Charitra Mehta, Member-Secretary of the National Sports Council (NSC).
-
Sant Kumar Mehta, former NSC member.
-
Govinda Ghimire, General Secretary of the Nepal Rugby Association.
Breaking New Ground for Nepal
Koirala’s appointment comes on the heels of his recent inclusion in the Asia Rugby Development Panel. While he has previously served as an assistant referee on the international stage, this tournament marks his debut in the lead role.
"Prem Bahadur Koirala is the first Nepali official to be nominated as a Main Referee for an international rugby tournament," confirmed General Secretary Govinda Ghimire.
This achievement is being viewed as a significant boost for the technical side of rugby in Nepal, proving that the country’s influence is growing beyond the players and into the officiating ranks of Asia Rugby.
