SAFF to Host First-Ever Futsal Championship in 2026
October 5, Kathmandu — In a landmark initiative to boost futsal development in South Asia, the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) has announced the launch of its first-ever SAFF Futsal Championship for both men and women. The tournament will take place in Thailand from January 13 to 26, 2026.
The historic championship will also include capacity-building programs for coaches and referees, aiming to establish a stronger foundation for futsal across the region. While futsal continues to grow globally, South Asia has remained behind in its development — a gap SAFF is determined to close.
“As members of FIFA, all national associations are expected to actively engage in futsal and beach soccer alongside traditional football. Unfortunately, South Asia has been lagging in these areas,” said SAFF General Secretary Purushottam Kattel.
“We have also noticed a major shortage of futsal officials in the region compared to other parts of the world. That’s why it’s crucial to begin development now. The Executive Committee has approved the championship, and we are thankful to FIFA and the AFC for their support in making this historic event possible.”
The SAFF Futsal Championship is seen as a strategic move to encourage structured growth of the sport in the region. With futsal gaining popularity among youth in recent years, SAFF hopes to foster long-term engagement by organizing formal competitions and training programs.
Further details regarding the championship, including participation criteria and match schedules, will be shared with stakeholders in the coming months.
