Sunmaya Budha Secures Historic Second Place at World Mountain and Trail Running Championships

Nepal’s Sunmaya Budha has brought glory to the nation by clinching second place at the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships held in Canfranc, Spain.

Competing in the 81-kilometer long trail run, Sunmaya clocked a time of 10 hours, 23 minutes, and 03 seconds, finishing just 26 minutes behind American runner Katie Schmitt, who claimed the gold medal.

This year marked the third edition of the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships, jointly organized for the first time by the World Mountain Running Association, World Athletics, and the International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU). The event witnessed a record-breaking participation of 1,700 athletes from 80 countries, making it the largest in history.

Nepal was represented by Sunmaya Budha, Suman Kulung, Sange Sherpa, and Man Kumar Roka under the banner of the Nepal Adventure Running Federation. In the men’s 82 km long trail event, Suman finished 32nd and Man Kumar placed 36th, showcasing Nepal’s growing presence in global trail running.

Speaking on the achievement, Federation President Akendra Kunwar said, “This is not just an individual success but a historic milestone that highlights Nepal’s potential and strong presence in world trail running.”

Sunmaya’s outstanding performance is being hailed as one of Nepal’s greatest achievements in international athletics, solidifying the country’s reputation in endurance sports.
